As with all sports, cheerleading training was suspended in March due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Our National Governing Body (SportCheer England) subsequently submitted a Return to Play Guidance Document on 19th July. The governing body are still awaiting approval of this document from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). We feel these delays are unacceptable.
The long term physical and mental effects of young people missing out on sport are now surely greater than any Covid-19 risks associated with training. We would assume that these are the reasons why other sports such as youth football and acro (a form of gymnastics which is broadly comparable to cheerleading) have had their RTP guidance approved.
It is unjust for the DCMS to ignore cheer and as such, we are calling for them to approve the SportCheer England document and let our sport re-commence now.
